So you’re dealing with some WINDSHIELD damage? If the crack or chip is minor, you may be able to get away with windshield repair rather than a complete windshield replacement. But the location, shape, and size of the damage will determine whether repairs are possible.

Below, the windshield repair experts at SWP Glass share which types of windshield chips and cracks are eligible for repair.

COMBINATION BREAKS

A combination break is exactly what it sounds like: windshield damage with a combination of characteristics. The damage may look like a bullseye crack with a star break in the center, or it may look like a singular impact point with bits of crushed glass around the center and small cracks extending outward.
Because combination breaks are complex, regardless of the extent of the damage, they always require an assessment to determine whether repairs are possible.
If the break is within the driver’s immediate field of vision, windshield replacement is necessary. If the cracks or central impact point is severe, again, replacement is required. If, however, the damage is outside the driver’s side of the windshield and the diameter of the break doesn’t exceed two inches, windshield repair may be possible.

STAR BREAKS

A star break has a distinct indentation at the impact point and small cracks that extend from its center. When you view the damage head-on, it looks a lot like a star, hence its rather telling name. This type of glass damage is essentially a cross between a chip and several small cracks, so an auto glass repair specialists will need to assess the severity of the damage to determine whether it’s eligible for repair.
Usually, if the break doesn’t exceed three inches in diameter, a qualified windshield repair specialist can address it. But if the size of the damage is substantial or the break is located near the edge of the glass, a complete windshield replacement is typically necessary.

BULLSEYE BREAKS

A bullseye crack looks strikingly like a bullseye target, hence its name. If the diameter of such a crack doesn’t exceed an inch, it’s typically eligible for repair. But if the crack sits within the driver’s immediate field of vision or near the edge of the glass, repairs aren’t so simple.
Though bullseyes are usually the easiest type of windshield damage to fix, their location and severity ultimately determine whether windshield repairs are necessary.

HALF-MOON BREAKS

A half-moon crack looks a lot like bullseye, only it’s half of a circle. This type of crack exhibits the same black appearance as a bullseye crack, but it looks more like a chip rather than a crack.
Half-moons aren’t very common and they’re considered a more of an advanced chip, which means they can be pretty complicated to repair. If the diameter of the damage is less than one inch, windshield repair may be possible. Again, your auto glass repair specialist will assess the damage and determine the best course of action.
Remember: Even if you think repairs are possible, professional auto glass repair specialists consider the integrity of the windshield first. If repairing the damage stands to weaken the glass significantly, windshield replacement is a better option since fully intact glass offers better safety protection.
